Rio Carnival takes place the 25th February to the 5th March 2022, the biggest holiday in Brazil, the Carnival.
As there is so much happening every night during the Rio Carnival, it is a good idea to have an agenda of events. This will let you know where the best parties and the coolest events are being held. Most of the fun for the gay crowd can be had at night in the nightclubs.
Farme de Amoedo
One of the primary gay meeting places in Rio is Farme de Amoedo, a street running along Ipanema Beach. As a matter of fact, there is a gay section on Ipanema beach known as Farme Gay in honor of the street. One of the most popular bars on Farme de Amoedo is Cafeina e To Nem Ai where most gay men begin their evening with a few cocktails. Farme de Amoedo is also home to several restaurants, shops and small bars.
The Week
For some hardcore partying, the gay crowd heads to The Week, a new dance club. It is located in a warehouse in downtown Rio. It has a large dance floor, wading pool and a few bars. On weekends, The Week invites internationally and nationally known DJs to spin for Sunday night parties.
Le Boy
Le Boy has been in Rio for several years and is usually the busiest on Sunday nights. The nightclub has several shows during the week including strip shows, comedy night, drag shows and dance nights with electro and bossa nova music spun by famous DJs. During the Carnival, Le Boy has balls every night.
Carnival Events
One of the most popular Carnival events for the gay crowd is the Banda de Ipanema parade. This parade started back in the 60s with around 30 friends. Today, more than 50 thousand people come from all over the world to take part in this event. There are really 3 parades held by Banda de Ipanema. The last and perhaps the biggest is held on the Tuesday of Rio Carnival week. The parade is especially popular with drag queens, and thousands participate in the parade. The drag queens dress up in their most outrageous outfits and strut their stuff through the streets of Ipanema. Expect to see Wonder Woman, Carmen Miranda, Snow White and the Little Mermaid walking down the street while the band plays their Samba music.
Circuit Parties
During the Carnival X-Demente holds circuit parties on Saturday and Tuesday, usually at the Fundicao Progresso in Lapa. Most of the circuit parties are held in Marina da Gloria. B.I.T.C.H (Barbies in Total Control Here) is another circuit party hosted by gays who flaunt their well muscled bodies during these events. Other circuit parties include Salvation and the White Party.
Gay Ball
One of the most sought after tickets in town is to the Gay Ball held at the Rio Scala on Tuesday. Drag queens descend on this ball with an entourage of handsome gay men. They walk down a runway with their escorts wearing their finest and most luxurious costumes. The public gathers outside the venue to cheer the drag queens on.
