LGBTQ+ Europe, Russia
Don't be complacent about rights affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (or Queer) (LGBTQ) people. Rights vary greatly by country or legal jurisdiction – encompassing everything from the legal recognition of same-sex marriage to the death penalty for homosexuality. According to Wikipedia as of July 2020, the penal codes of nine United Nations-recognised countries, Afghanistan, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Mauritania, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and Yemen, impose the death penalty for homosexuality.
Though Russia spans Europe and Asia, we have listed it in Europe as most of the LGBTQ+ venues are in the European side of Russia.
Despite prejudice from much of society and authorities, Russia has an established LGBTQ+ scene, particularly in the two leading cities of Moscow and St Petersburg.
Homosexuality is not illegal in Russia. However, under the 2013 Propaganda Law, introduced by President Putin, it is illegal to promote 'non-traditional sexual relationships' in the presence of minors. In reality this means there are no legal LGBTQ+ pride events and speaking openly about LGBTQ+ rights can result in a fine, 15 days’ detainment and/or deportation.
It is generally safe for LGBTQ+ tourists to travel around Russia if you are prepared to stay in the closet and use common sense throughout your visit, especially in public.
