Looking at that graphic web designer case

August 2023 PinkUK Editor, Simon Williams

Looking across the pond at what’s happening in the USA on LGBTQ+ equalities

For those legal nerds who like watching court reports and legal developments, especially around LGBTQ+ equalities, the USA stands out for what we would call its ‘constitutional eloquence’ about so many matters that affect people there and also around the globe.

Graphic Web Designer Case
US Supreme Court, Washington

In the late 18th Century, the original thirteen colonies in North America rightly tore away the yoke of the British monarchy, then His Majesty King George III, and declared themselves a union of independent states. These former colonies then coalesced to become the United States of America with another 37 states added since that time to the present day.

In the UK, like many English mother tongue-speaking countries that inherited English laws, we take for granted that we have the rule of law and our rights but it’s a startling observation in fact we don't have the same protections that the USA enjoys.

Without getting too legalistic, in summary, the Americans are able assert their personal and civil rights against articles in the constitution.

However, in the UK, we do not have such a constitution, relying on precedent and good will of our rulers.

We at PinkUk don't think that’s good enough. So you can see how it works in the USA on LGBTQ+ rights (or lack of) in the excellent article published on the US LGBTQ+ site LGBTQ Nation on the US Supreme Court’s decision to affirm of a Christian who markets as web designer but wishes to refuse to honour contracts with same-sex couples as it goes against her faith.

The right-wing US Supreme Court backed her in a recent decision. We'll add some more reporting on this soon to so keep your reading glasses on.

Love and Pink Respect to all our readers for August!
