The Oxford Pride committee are excited to announce our plans to hold a Virtual Pride event on Saturday 5 June 2021.
We are very heartened to see that larger prides around the UK are planning to hold in-person events from August 2021 onwards, and wholeheartedly support them. However, having carefully and thoroughly examined the logistics, expected costs, and ongoing uncertainty regarding the return from COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the committee came to a unanimous decision that it would not be possible for us to hold an in-person Oxford Pride event this year.
We had an excellent response to our virtual event for Oxford Pride 2020, with 11,500 viewers on our 3 hour live stream. Therefore, we learned a lot from this experience, and have already started planning how to make this even bigger and better – including providing multiple opportunities for local people to share their ways of celebrating the day! We can’t wait to share our plans with you, and mark LGBTQIA+ Pride Month together.
Our hope is that this will help to bridge the gap to when in-person Pride events can occur. We appreciate for many this will feel so far away, and that many others may be feeling anxious about returning to large-scale events. Whilst we would not be able to make definite decisions on behalf of the incoming committee to be elected at the AGM in June 2021, we will ensure to have recommendations in place for Autumn Oxford Pride events, to reunite members of the local LGBTQIA+ community once more.
Reaching our community remains at the heart of our work during this challenging time, and we are grateful to everyone who has attended our virtual events, shared our posts, and encouraged us. We would also like to thank our committee, members, volunteers, sponsors, and all other charities and partners who have continued to support Oxford Pride. Together, we are strongly dedicated to recognising, celebrating, and promoting awareness of LGBTQIA+ life in Oxfordshire with an amazing Virtual Oxford Pride 2021.
