The Homomonument symbolizes the long road of gay emancipation in the Netherlands and far beyond. It consists of three triangles of Rosa Porino Granite that together form one large triangle. The three triangles represent the past, present and future. Here we commemorate everyone who was murdered or prosecuted (and is still being) for his or her sexual preference and / or identity. Here we celebrate the freedom to be who we are. Here we call for vigilance for the present and the future.

Almost daily you see people in contemplation or groups who are informed about the meaning of this monument. There are often flowers at the point of the monument, in the Keizersgracht. Submitted by newly-married couples or the relatives of a deceased person. Anniversary of the Dead and Transgender Memorial Day also take place here. During Liberation Day and the Amsterdam Gay Pride, people dance on the Homomonument and the monument is also the place to come together for demonstrations and protests.

The pink triangle was the sign of the homosexual in Nazi Germany concentration camps, just as Jews wore a yellow star of David. From the 1970s onwards, this pink triangle has become the proud symbol against oppression and exclusion of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people.

The text on the monument 'To Friendship Such A Mattress Desire' is a line of poetry by the gay, Jewish writer Jacob Israël de Haan (1881-1924).
