What you need to know about poppers

Poppers have been around for decades, the first original formulation dates back to 1844, we can thank French chemist Antoine-Jerome Balard for this. From that point, the formula has had various adaptations and finally made it to the gay scene in the 1970s. Those who can remember will most likely think back to those times as the heyday of poppers. However a bottle of Liquid Gold at the time was very different to the current version. In those days there were no regulations around the product and the formula is no longer legal in the UK.

Legality around poppers

There has been a lot to do with the legality of poppers, also called and sold as room aromas. Without boring you with all the details in 2016 the UK's Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) provided a full assessment of the harms and psychoactivity of poppers. After these findings, the government excluded poppers (AKA alkyl nitrites), from the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016, which bans anything that “by simulating or depressing the person’s central nervous system affects the person’s mental functioning or emotional state”. By doing so room aromas are available for sale in the UK. The sale is limited to certain formulations. The Amyl variation for example falls under a different law and cannot be sold in the UK. On the bottles for sale, you will also find a warning that the product is not for consumption and is to be used as a room odoriser.

UK only

The regulations around the product described above apply to the UK only. Other countries will have different laws. You might be able to find some products on sale in for example France that you would not be able to get in the UK. Fear not the UK formula is great and we feel classes as strong poppers. There are so many different brands on the market these days that you might wonder which ones would be best for you. Unfortunately, finding the right one is a bit of a personal journey. What some customers love might not be the one for others. The best guide would probably be based on the best sellers and those room aromas customers keep coming back for. Here is a little list of brands that satisfy most people.

Berlin XXX
This brand has been around for over a decade and is aimed at the hardcore market. It is available in 25ml and 10ml bottles and is the best seller in our store.

Liquid Gold
This is probably the brand that has been around the longest. It is a real classic, and many customers start with a bottle of liquid gold and then progress to Berlin XXX, Power Rush or another brand aimed more towards the hardcore market.

Rush Another brand that has been around for a long time. Rush poppers are a favourite but in recent years Power Rush has become more popular. Power rush has the added benefit of a power pellet. This is suggested to reinvigorate the formulation when shaking the bottle.

European poppers
Imported from Europe we have several brands like BB, Twisted Beast, Man Scent and more. Most of these bottles can be recognised by their square bottle shape rather than the traditional round shape. Unfortunately, these room aromas tend to be a bit more expensive because of import duties, freight costs and taxes.

Fetish Poppers
The last popular category of poppers is the Fetish poppers with brands like Fist, FF, PIG and Bears. Within their niche, which is bigger than we thought, these are best sellers.

Storage and safety information

1. Storage
   To keep your room aromas lasting longer we recommend that you store them in a cold room. A fridge would be great but if that is not an option just store them in a cool place and most importantly, keep them away from sunlight. Heat and Sun increase the evaporation.
2. Safe usage
   Follow the instructions on the room aroma bottles for safe usage and keep the product away from minors.
