Issue No. 52 – August 2024

Belgrade Pride 2024

Belgrade Pride, Serbia. 2 to 8 September 2024

Since our last newsletter, lots has happened. In the UK, we woke up to a new government on 5 July, the first time Labour has been in power for 14 years. The   government set out its legislative agenda in the ‘King’s Speech’. In fact, His Majesty Charlie just reads what he’s given by the Prime Minister. The good news is that the new government has pledged to outlaw conversion therapies which are aimed at changing people’s sexual orientation and/or gender ID.

However, the devil is in the detail, and we’ve been here before under the previous Conservative government and nothing happened. Activists have been pushing for a ban to include prayer, preaching and pastoral conversations which do not affirm a person’s same-sex orientation or gender identity, including Trans. We need to keep a watchful eye that there won’t be any loopholes that expose groups such as the Trans community to continue. Fingers crossed.

We’d like to congratulate all organisers of Trans Pride events around the world for their efforts in winning over society.  PinkUk was at Brighton & Hove Trans Pride on 20 July, one of the largest in the World outside the USA.

Dating section closing
As previously announced, we are closing the Dating section on 31 August.

Finally, we wish all Pride festival-goers in August a fantastic time and the remainder of the summer.  Two large UK Prides are happening this month: in the south Brighton & Hove Pride is happening this coming week 2-4 August and Manchester Pride in the north of England from 23 to 26 August. Let’s also commend those Prides which keep political values alive. It’s not just about partying! We would not have the freedom to party if we didn’t campaign and still so much to do!

Love & Pink Respect team PinkUk xx
