Pretoria Pride 2024

Pretoria Pride, South Africa. 5 October 2024

Olympics team LGBTQ+
First of all, we would like to congratulate the Olympics team LGBTQ+ with a record 193 know out LGBTQ+ athletes, with 11 of these representing the UK. For the Paralympic games, there are estimated to be 27 LGBTQ+ athletes, with 7 of these representing the UK.

The passing of Sphen
Besides the sad passing of former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson. It is with great sadness that Sphen has passed away in August. Sphen with his partner Magic, the gay penguins who became famous worldwide in 2018 as a symbol of equality. They successfully adopted and raised two chicks, Sphengic & Clancy. Upon his death, it is reported that Magic started to sing. As of October 2023, over 1,500 animal species have been reported to engage in same-sex sexual behaviour, according to ‘Nature Communications’.

Bulgarian’s anti-LGBTQ+ law
People ask why do we still need prides in the UK these days, when there is so much equality? This is not quite true, and the   number of homophobic and transphobic attacks is increasing in the UK. It must be noted that these hard-won rights can easily and suddenly be snatched away from us. What if Trump gets into the White House? Then there is what’s happening in Europe now. The Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, had passed a law banning LGBTQ+ “propaganda” in schools. These laws are similar to the legislation passed in Russia and Hungary recently and echo Section 28 in the1990s UK. Bulgaria does not recognise same-sex relationships. The Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner, Michael O’Flaherty, has said he was “deeply concerned” by an LGBTQ “promotion” ban, urging
President Rumen Radev “not to sign it”. So the fight is not over. We must fight to protect and retain the gains we have had to fight so hard to achieve.
