Polari literary salon began in 2007 in the upstairs room of a bar in Soho. Events are now held monthly at the Southbank Centre and regularly sell out.

In 2013, Polari was named ‘LGBT Cultural Event of the Year’ in the Co-op Respect Loved By You Awards. Supporters include Patrick Gale, Ali Smith and Sarah Waters, who describes Polari as “always fun, always thought-provoking – a guaranteed good night out” Polari Up North launched in March 2013 at Huddersfield Literature Festival and is now an annual event. Polari has also popped up at Manchester Literature Festival, Queer Contact, L-Fest, Aye Write, Soho Literature Festival and Stoke Newington Literary Festival.

In 2014, Polari toured for the first time, funded by Arts Council England. The tour was a huge success and in 2015 there was a second national tour covering 12 cities around the UK, from Brighton to Newcastle, Cardiff to Cambridge. Also in 2015, Polari on Sea launched in Hastings with a six month residency at The Printworks, funded by ACE. A second six month season launched in Feb 2016.
