Why Monday 17 May 2021 is a doubly important day for the UK’s LGBTQ+ communities

Monday 17 May in the UK is a red letter day or as we at PinkUk would say a Pink letter day for the LGBTQ+ communities for two reasons:
It’s the first day in the UK that LGBTQ+ pubs, bars, concert venues and restaurants can open their indoors to customers and possibly overseas holidays.

It’s also the date of the annual International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia or IDAHOBIT.
The event was started in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by all LGBTQ+ people among others. 17 May is now commemorated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are still illegal.
IDAHOBIT’s date remembers the 17 May 1990 when the World Health Organization declassified ‘homo-sexuality’ as a mental disorder. So 17 May is indeed a Pink letter day! To find out more about IDAHOBIT see the world organisers’ Facebook page

Brits’ overseas holidays could be sooner than thought...

The UK government’s estimates of easing restrictions on holiday flight travel from the UK have changed again. It’s now looking more likely that they could be permitted as early as 17 May.

Previously, the UK media reported that ‘government sources’ had hinted that holiday travel abroad might not be permitted until as late as August given the deteriorating Covid situation in the rest of Europe. Since then Grant Shapps, UK Transport Secretary, said on 9 April, as reported by the BBC:
Easing foreign travel "This is the first time I'm able to come on and say I'm not advising against booking foreign holidays. Yes, you'll want to check what the situation is [around publication of this newsletter] with when that list the green, amber, red, is produced. [colour code for safety level of destinations] You'll want to know that you've got good holiday insurance and flexible flights and the rest of it.”
At of time of writing, the government’s ‘traffic light’ list for countries had not been published. It was expected by the end of April. See PinkUk travelling
